Attention Green Thumbs:
Join Our “Growing Circle”!
Did you know that the number of seniors coming to RCCS jumped by almost 60% during the last three months? Or that 40% of the meals we now provide go to children, up from 30%? Besides cash contributions, you can help us feed hungry elders and kids by applying your green thumb!
The Growing Circle is our own little home-grown program
to encourage kind neighbors like you to grow and donate extra veggies or fruit. Plant an extra row of veggies like zucchini or tomatoes. Recruit some neighborhood kids to help you harvest a little more fruit from your trees. Pool your efforts with a few neighbors or friends and trade off bringing your harvest to RCCS.
Arlene Smothermon, who shared her story with the Sacramento Bee on May 2, was one of eight seniors in line when we opened on a recent morning. She’s just one of the many people who will benefit from your efforts. She and her disabled husband are raising their two teenage grandchildren on their combined income of about $1,500 per month.
How to help:
- If you’re still putting in your garden, plant an extra row or container.
- It’s not too late if you haven’t planted yet! You can plant as late as late May and share your bounty as things ripen in two to three months.
- Then, when things are ripe, come down to the food pantry at 1322 27 th St. If you can’t deliver, call and we’ll find a way to pick it up (446-2627).
Can’t garden? Consider donating “Seed Money”!
Our goal is to provide everyone who comes to us in need with at least some fresh, healthy produce. You can still help by donating $10, $20, $50 or $100 to our “Seed Money” campaign! Donate now
