FACT SHEET

February 2004 Hunger Fact Sheet

Sacramento County ranks 28th out of 58 counties in California in poverty and 25th in child poverty.

Despite California’s agricultural resources, one in six Californians in the Central Valley is hungry or at serious risk of facing hunger.
According to America’s Second Harvest, California ranks 15 out of 50 states for food insecurity. 11.8 percent of Californians are food insecure.

Food Insecurity is the lack of dependable access to nutritionally balanced food through socially acceptable means. In its extreme form, this results in hunger—going without food for lack of money. One of the causes of food insecurity and hunger are low wages in service and retail employment, and the growing cost of family housing.

During the month of February we served ………

  • 1,815 clients
  • 1210 adults
  • 605 children
