February 2004 Hunger Fact SheetSacramento County ranks
28th out of 58 counties in California in poverty and 25th in child
poverty.
Despite Californias agricultural resources, one in six Californians
in the Central Valley is hungry or at serious risk of facing hunger.
According to Americas Second Harvest, California ranks 15
out of 50 states for food insecurity. 11.8 percent of Californians
are food insecure.
Food Insecurity is the lack of dependable access to nutritionally
balanced food through socially acceptable means. In its extreme
form, this results in hungergoing without food for lack
of money. One of the causes of food insecurity and hunger are
low wages in service and retail employment, and the growing cost
of family housing.
During the month of February we served
- 1,815 clients
- 1210 adults
- 605 children
- 913 households
- 242 were new households or 26% had not been to RCCS in the past.
