Emergency Food and Shelter Programs
April 2005
With the arrival of spring, our thoughts naturally turn to summer.
We look forward to a slower pace of life, to family reunions and
vacations. But in our region of the Sacramento Valley, more than
76,000 people are at risk for hunger. Unfortunately, hunger does
not go on vacation.
Approximately one third of those at risk for hunger are children.
With the end of the school year, they will not have the security
of the school breakfast and lunch programs. Many live in households
with at least one working adult, whose low wages simply can't
cover rent, the cost of utility bills, gasoline, car payments,
medical care and food.
National Hunger Awareness Day (NHAD) was created in 2002 at a
time when there was significant increase in the number of Americans
unable to feed their families. Three years later, the economic
climate has not changed for the working poor, and current gas
prices are adding to their burden. NHAD on June 7, 2005 is an
effort to raise awareness and donations to help fight hunger in
communities like ours.
